Renewed IRA ceasefire; Sinn Féin enters multi‑party talks; new UK government backs process

The Renewed Ceasefire and Sinn Féin's Entry into Talks

In July 1997, the IRA announced a renewed ceasefire, paving the way for Sinn Féin, the political wing of the IRA, to enter multi-party talks. The new Labour government, led by Prime Minister Tony Blair, backed the peace process and was instrumental in bringing all parties to the negotiating table.

The entry of Sinn Féin into the talks marked a significant step forward in the peace process. It was the first time that all major parties were involved in negotiations to end the conflict in Northern Ireland.
