Good Friday Agreement establishes power‑sharing; Omagh bombing by dissidents shocks the process

The Good Friday Agreement and the Omagh Bombing

On 10th April 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was signed, establishing a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland. The agreement was a major milestone in the peace process and was endorsed by referendums in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

However, the peace process was shocked by the Omagh bombing in August 1998. The bombing, carried out by dissident republicans, killed 29 people and injured hundreds more. It was the deadliest single incident in the history of the Troubles.
