Canary Wharf bombing ends IRA ceasefire; multi‑party talks proceed on limited basis

The Canary Wharf Bombing

On 9th February 1996, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) ended its ceasefire with a bombing in Canary Wharf, London. The attack killed two people and caused extensive damage to the surrounding area. The ceasefire had been in place since August 1994, but the IRA announced its end due to the British government's refusal to include Sinn Féin in peace talks unless the IRA disarmed.

Despite the bombing, multi-party talks continued, albeit on a limited basis. The British and Irish governments remained committed to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland.
