Irish Free State established; Civil War erupts over Treaty terms

The Birth of the Irish Free State

In 1922, the Irish Free State was established, marking a significant milestone in Irish history. This was a result of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which ended the Irish War of Independence against Britain.

However, the Treaty was not universally accepted in Ireland. It led to a split in the Irish Republican movement, between those who accepted the Treaty and those who saw it as a betrayal of the Irish Republic declared in 1916.

The Outbreak of the Civil War

This division led to the outbreak of the Irish Civil War, which began in June 1922. The pro-Treaty forces, who controlled the Free State, fought against the anti-Treaty IRA. The war was marked by atrocities on both sides and caused deep divisions in Irish society.
