Census shows drastic Irish population collapse; enduring cultural consequences (indirect)

The Aftermath of the Famine

The 1851 census revealed the full extent of the devastation caused by the Great Irish Famine. The population had dropped dramatically, from over 8 million in 1845 to just over 6 million in 1851.

Cultural Consequences

The famine had lasting cultural consequences. The Irish language, already in decline, was further weakened as those who emigrated were primarily Irish speakers. The loss of population also led to economic and social changes, with a shift from farming to wage labor.
