La Tène trade networks reach Atlantic Europe; early Celtic polities form in Gaul and beyond

La Tène Trade Networks

The La Tène culture was not only known for its unique art style and social structure, but also for its extensive trade networks. By 400 BCE, these networks had reached as far as Atlantic Europe, including the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula.

Formation of Early Celtic Polities

The expansion of the La Tène trade networks also led to the formation of early Celtic polities in Gaul and beyond. These polities were often centered around fortified hilltop sites, known as oppida, and were governed by warrior elites. The formation of these polities marked the beginning of the Celtic Iron Age.
