Killing of solicitor Pat Finucane intensifies scrutiny of collusion allegations

The Killing of Pat Finucane

On 12th February 1989, Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane was shot dead by loyalist paramilitaries in front of his family. Finucane, who had represented both republican and loyalist paramilitaries, was a controversial figure. His killing intensified scrutiny of allegations of collusion between the British security forces and loyalist paramilitaries.

The Allegations of Collusion

Following Finucane's death, allegations emerged that the British security forces had colluded with the loyalist paramilitaries in his killing. These allegations were based on evidence such as the use of police intelligence by the killers and the lack of action by the police to prevent the killing.

The allegations led to several investigations, which concluded that there was collusion but did not identify any individuals responsible. The controversy continues to this day, with calls for a public inquiry into the killing.
