Government of Ireland Act partitions the island; Northern Ireland created

The Partition of Ireland and the Creation of Northern Ireland

The Government of Ireland Act 1920 was a significant piece of legislation that led to the partition of Ireland into Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. It was enacted on December 23, 1920.

The Act was intended to provide home rule for Ireland, but the political realities of the time led to the partition. The six northeastern counties of Ulster became Northern Ireland, remaining part of the United Kingdom, while the rest of Ireland became Southern Ireland.

However, the institutions of Southern Ireland never fully functioned, and it was superseded by the Irish Free State in 1922.

The partition of Ireland had significant political and social consequences, leading to decades of conflict known as The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
