The Brighton Hotel Bombing
On October 12, 1984, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) targeted the UK government leadership in a bombing at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. The attack was aimed at the Conservative Party leadership, who were staying at the hotel for the annual party conference.
The bomb was planted by Patrick Magee, a member of the IRA. It exploded at 2:54 am, killing five people and injuring 31 others. Among the injured were government officials and their spouses.
Impact and Aftermath
The bombing had a significant impact on the UK government and the public. It led to increased security measures and a hardening of attitudes towards the IRA. Despite the attack, the Conservative Party conference continued as planned, with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher delivering her speech as scheduled.
