Bloody Sunday

On January 30, 1972, a tragic event known as 'Bloody Sunday' occurred in Derry, Northern Ireland. During a civil rights march, British soldiers opened fire on unarmed civilians, resulting in 14 deaths and numerous injuries.

Suspension of Stormont

In response to escalating violence, the British government suspended the Northern Ireland Parliament (Stormont) on March 24, 1972. This marked the end of fifty years of devolved government in Northern Ireland.

Direct Rule from Westminster

Following the suspension of Stormont, direct rule was imposed from Westminster. This marked a significant shift in the governance of Northern Ireland, with power effectively transferred from Belfast to London.
