Battle of the Standard: English defeat a Scottish army including Strathclyde/Cumbrian elements

Overview

The Battle of the Standard, also known as the Battle of Northallerton, took place on 22 August 1138. The English army, led by William of Aumale, defeated a Scottish army that included elements from Strathclyde and Cumbria.

The Battle

The Scottish army, led by King David I of Scotland, was attempting to annex northern England. The English forces, however, were able to repel the Scottish invasion using a 'standard' - a wagon-mounted mast with holy banners.

Aftermath

The battle resulted in a significant defeat for the Scots, but it did not end David I's ambitions in northern England. He continued his campaigns, which led to further conflict in the region.
