The Assassination of Lord Mountbatten

On August 27, 1979, Lord Louis Mountbatten, a British statesman and naval officer, was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The IRA planted a bomb on his fishing boat in Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Ireland. The explosion killed Mountbatten and three others, including two teenagers.

The Warrenpoint Ambush

On the same day, the IRA carried out the Warrenpoint ambush, the deadliest attack on the British Army during the Troubles. The ambush took place in Northern Ireland and resulted in the deaths of 18 British soldiers.
